It is the first chapel built on the Sacro Monte by Fra Bernardino Caimi in
1491, and it reproduces the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Outside the entrance
door, two little niches, one containing the skull of Blessed Bernardino Caimi
and the other a fragment of rock from the true Sepulchre of Jesus, should be
noted.
In the porch, on the left, Mary Magdalen kneeling (a 15th cen. wooden statue
by Gaudenzio Ferrari ), and on the right, Angel announcing the Resurrection
of Jesus. Bending down, one can enter the Sepulchre proper, in which the dead
Christ is venerated (15th cen. wooden statue). The paintings are by the Bacchetta
brothers (1944).
