The Disciple Peter, having fled after the arrest of Jesus, had subsequently
entered the courtyard. Recognised by the soldiers who had arrested Jesus, he
swears he does not know him. The crowing of a cock reminds him of Christ's prophecy:"before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice." The disciple goes out
and weeps bitterly.
