Brought before Caiphas, Jesus is accused by false withnesses. Asked whether
he is the Son of God, he replies, "I am." For Caiphas this reply is tantamount
to blasphemy and, with supreme hypocrisy, he feigns terror and rends his garments
according to Hebrew custom. For him Jesus is worthy of death, the fate meted
out to blasphemers at that time.
